What you see here is Montpelier, a nineteen-room mansion General Henry Knox built in 1794 - and a replica is sitting in Thomaston.   We, with 30 friends, got a tour Monday night that was so interesting to be introduced to the legacy of
General Henry Knox, "the forgotten founding father."

"Throughout the Revolution, Henry Knox served as one of General Washington's most valued officers.  Later, as Washington's Secretary of War, Knox promoted and established a standing army and navy; drew up plans for our military academies; established militias and national armories; and founded the Society of Cincinnati."   Knox was a hero of the American Revolution, a very important man indeed.

Knox retired in 1795 and moved his family to Thomaston.   He built their home, Montpelier, a 12,000 square foot mansion which was known as the "most beautiful in New England."   The house fell into disrepair after Knox's death and was demolished.   The rebuilt Montpelier opened its doors in 1931, with "amazing accuracy" and has served as a museum and a memorial to General Knox.
Our tour guides were ready to show us around this piece of history.

Historical reenactments are held at the museum along with several free annual events:  Knox's July Birthday Celebration, an October Harvest Celebration, and a Holiday Open House the first weekend in December.    Some fun and informative things to learn about the past in this beautiful setting.   It's a place to take your visitors and learn the importance of our American history
right here at our back door.
