I wake up this morning and what do I see? SNOW! Where the winter wonderland of beauty lies amidst the stillness in April.
As I sip on my coffee, watching the flakes fall from the sky, magic happens. The trees in the background, their branches dusted with snow, look like ice cream cones and I’m immersed in the taste of pure pleasure. A slight winter breeze shakes the piled snow off the branches where wild flower pods poke giving a sharp contrast to the spectacle. I was trying to decide what summer flowers will get planted this year. I look up and right there stand a group of deer gathered around the old and weathered pots. I make a move to see how close I can get to them. Then with a flash of their tails and a high leap they take off into the woods. The ground is carpeted in a three inch pile of beauty with deer footprints leading the way. I miss my walk with Spencer as the snow only deepens and we seem to get buried in the beauty. A package arrives and I open the door to get it and zip there escapes a 91 pound yellow lab. He sped as fast as his legs would carry him, to who knows where. Running away from me with a devious look back and a trounce and leap through mounds of snow, I witness one happy friend. To the garage I go, jumping in the car to chase him down as this becomes a game he loves to play. He runs rapidly with long strides as if we are in a race. I am driving slow behind him until he lingers to get a bite of the snow. I stop the car, getting out with leash in hand while the back door stands open. He runs and jumps in. A blanket on the back seat waits for those dirty wet paws to land as he gets in a relaxed mode and shows me he’s ready for the ride home. This is the usual game this dog plays. Normally he stays in the yard to take in nature’s delight and sniffing the air as the wind picks up. Could he possibly be part human? Driving home I notice the quiet that exists in the outdoor surroundings. I spot a red berry or is it a leaf, attached to a distant evergreen tree. The camera comes out and beauty gets captured. A picture of this scene could easily get painted and framed as a reminder of the joy winter, or rather spring, brings. As I turn from the rock crushed and damaged road into our driveway thoughts abound. I stay in the car to converse with Spencer so he knows my dislike of him taking off into nowhere, but always looks behind to make sure I am still there. The imperfection among the human footprints and paw markings in the snow of a naughty dog provide a quiet beauty and inner peace.
